Baby's Growth and Development in Week 39 (Tenth Month)

Are you aware of the growth milestones that your baby is expected to achieve by 39th week or 10th month of her development? Read on to know more.

Week 39 gets busier for you as you have to be more vigilant about your baby’s safety. Your baby is filled with more energy and inquisitiveness to explore the whole world surrounding him or her. He or she would end up either turning over or banding or gumming small objects for 20% of his or her waking hours. Also, your baby would be always sticking something into his or her mouth. Be careful, but let your baby follow his or her bliss.

Special-Cognitive Context

At week 39, your child can generalize sounds of animals and people and many more new things. For example, your baby knows that a cat will mew and every other cat will do the same, he or she does not need to learn separately about the sound of every cat. You can always boost your baby’s special-cognitive context by watching vehicles go by together and narrating each vehicle’s appropriate category such as red truck, blue motorcycle, black car, etc. This will build your baby’s vocabulary at the same time. If you mix chopsticks and spoons and play a game with your baby to separate them in two sections, your baby would be able to do the same soon.

No Support Needed, Mommy!

Yes, your baby may be able to stand without any support on week 39, but this maybe for just a moment. He or she may be able to drink from his or her own cup though you have to be careful when he or she tries to keep the cup down – he or she is more likely to toss it while setting it down. Your baby now can hand-feed himself or herself. Your infant can also hold out a leg or arm to help you dress him or her. Your baby may walk a few steps taking help of your grip, but that is not very stable now. These developments in motor skills are great milestones of week 39.

Game Time

Your baby is ready to play more physical games like rolling a ball back and forth to you while they are in seated position. Peek-a-boo maybe one of your baby’s favorites now, which you more than likely mastered with your baby a few weeks ago. Play all sorts of games that will help all of your baby’s skills and senses mature.

Getting Smarter

Once the music is put on, you would see your baby is moving his or her upper body and clapping his or her hands. At week 39, your baby is ready to learn which parts of your face is being pointed by you, such as eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc., and your baby will start pointing them too when you name them. Also, your baby understands few of your words, for example, when you say “come here”; your baby would actually crawl and come to you. You can also teach your kids finger movements with different baby songs.

Security Objects

Just like week 38, even during week 39, your baby would become dependent on certain objects – this is all because babies at this age feel that you cannot be always there by their side to comfort them, and they also realize that they are an individual, so they cannot expect you always by their side; instead, they turn to some external object to offer them comfort during bedtime or scary situations or when they feel anxious or tired. Mostly soft blankets and stuffed toys turn out to be their security objects.
When your baby is too much attached to his or her security object, you need not worry and force him or her to give it up – it is a normal phase that will pass soon. Though you must make sure that your baby’s security objects are not sippy cups or juice bottle as that can ruin his or her appetite and also cause early tooth decay. If in case your baby has chosen sippy cup to be his or her comforter, fill it up with water and let him or her enjoy his or her time.

How to stimulate baby’s growth during the 39th week or 10th month of her development? What kind of growth milestones do 10-months old babies achieve? Discuss here.
